Building A Publishing House

It’s not really all that hard to write something and sell it. People do it every day. But then what?

The Publishing4Profit concept is not about how to write and publish a single report, booklet, book, or publication. It is about building a publishing business that will provide long term profits.

Just as a house requires a solid foundation from which to rise, a publishing business needs a base from which to grow.

With my company, our Gypsy Journal RV travel newspaper is the foundation we built our business on. It provides us significant income, but even more importantly, it is the major marketing vehicle for our special reports, booklets, CDs and books.

Our main website www.gypsyjournal.net is the next level in our publishing “house.” The website promotes our print publication, and also serves as a marketing venue. Every day we get orders for our products from the website. Though I designed it as a secondary marketing vehicle, over time the website has grown to the point where it competes with our print edition in terms of sales.

The individual products you create are the “rooms” of your publishing “house.” As outlined in my What Is Publishing4Profit? module, just as the rooms in a house are connected and lead you from one room to another, the “rooms” in your publishing “house” should lead your customers to other “rooms” – products you have created to sell to them. Sure, you could live in a one room house, but living in a house with many rooms gives you a more comfortable lifestyle and more options. A publishing “house” with just one “room” will not be nearly as beneficial as a house with many rooms.

If you want to build a self-publishing business, you will need to develop a foundation that works for you. It may be a printed publication, a website, an e-mail newsletter, or possibly a seminar series. Whatever it is, spend the time to create a business plan in which your company grows from that foundation. Build those extra “rooms” and watch your business and your profits grow.
